Landon Annex - 1702 Wyoming Ave
Houses Grades 3-6 |
The
history of the property at 1710 Wyoming Ave. dates back to the
1800's. According to records in the
Luzerne County Court House, the structure was built prior
to 1900, but no exact date is given. The property was owned
by
the Colonial
Coal
Co. of Reading, then deeded to Charles Loveland. Charles
Loveland was one of the original settlers of our area. He
was a very prominent local attorney. Charles Loveland sold
the property to Andrew and Ruth Sordoni in 1919. Afterwards,
Andrew and Ruth's son, Senator Jack Sordoni, and his family
occupied the house.
In the early 70's the Sordoni's donated their home at 1710 Wyoming
Ave. to the Children's Museum of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Apple
Tree, which was first located in Kingston opening in 1977, was
looking for space to use for expansion. In 1984, The Apple
Tree Nursey and Primary School of Kingston rented
the
building.
It
was later
purchased
by Apple Tree and an addition was constructed in 1986. Proceeds
of the sale were donated to the United Way.
In 1986 Apple Tree consolidated all of its operations into the
1710 Wyoming Avenue property.
In 1996 the adjoining property at 1702 Wyoming Ave. was purhased.
This acquisition allowed our school to expand to include grades
3 through 6. The name used for the upper grades is Susquehanna
Preparatory School, or Susquehanna Prep.
The building is known as the Landon Annex, because it was originally
constructed as insurance offices for Landon Associates, which
was operated by Dorothy and Herb Landon. The Landon Annex houses
classrooms for grades 3 through 6, our library, cafeteria and
the computer lab for grades 3-6.
Between our two buildings there is an abundance of outdoor space
for recess fun and other outdoor activities. The combination
of these
facilities, along with the use of the adjacent church basement
for physical education, make Apple Tree/Susquehanna Prep an ideal
situation for primary and elementary education. |
